Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a number of access tunnels providing entry to the facility... early reports are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I must thank every member of our armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "They were part of numerous British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military conducted what it described as a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
