White House Announces Government Employee Layoffs as Funding Gap Nears Third Week
Administration officials disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Russell Vought posted on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.
While the official provided no details on which departments were impacted, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that staff reductions would take place at the CISA. Also, a union for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by the public and vowed to contest the actions in court.
“It is disgraceful that the administration has exploited the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.
The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the announcement, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”
Legislative Impasse and Budget Dispute
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to vote for a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it contains healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have put the chamber in recess until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is not expected to be resolved soon.
At a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, the speaker, blasted opposition lawmakers for not supporting the Republican proposal, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.
“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, American service members, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”
Legal and Operational Constraints
Last week, unions filed for a court injunction to block the government from carrying out any reductions in force during the shutdown. A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, criticized the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.
“It is wrong to make government staff suffer because our leaders in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our government running,” the advocate stated. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”
A notable point is that members of Congress and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
